J.J. Abrams has done it again. His latest trek into the unknown hits just about every single nail there is to hit. It's a 132 minute romp of CGI madness, glaring British villains and casual Vulcan racism

Perhaps the biggest mystery surrounding J.J. Abrams’ latest space nerdgasm was whether or not the title required a colon. But rather than sit here and talk grammar for five minutes I’m sure you’d rather read about why Star Trek (colon?) Into Darkness is the best film Media Blasphemy have seen all year.

Before you read on further though it’s worth a mention that despite being this site’s chief film guy I somehow managed to miss Django Unchained, Zero Dark Thirty and Lincoln, so instead Trek 2 (as the youth call it) is being judged against such titans as Schwarzenegger’s Chevrolet commercial and that crap Bruce Willis movie.

Nevertheless, Into Darkness will surely be reaching for the summit of any critics’ top films of 2013 list… it’s absolutely brilliant.

Things begin with plenty of friction; Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) are having a bit of a spat over some very dramatic antics that occurred on some pre-wheel civilisation’s planet. This sets the tone for the core of the movie; the relationship between the two principal characters – possibly the film’s greatest stroke, but more on that later.

However, all that is pushed to one side when the mysterious John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) begins a bombardment of terror against the Federation for reasons unknown. Thus, our favourite crew are thrown back into the mix and set out on a galactic manhunt that’ll put them and their ship to the test in the face of ultimate peril.

Into Darkness is certainly one of the most frenetic films of the year; you don’t get a moment’s rest during the 132 minute CGI orgy and that is one if its key strengths. It feels like one enormous action sequence, rather like Black Hawk Down, but it never gets tiring, dull or repetitive. You’ll be hurled across the galaxy, thrown into space and bombarded by photon torpedoes – though some of the action hovers very close to a disturbing terrorism line, an issue which the film tackles head on. Of course, it’s a sinister and contemporary issue and that grounds the film in reality – it’s something we can all relate to (sadly) but at least that stops it becoming a wild and cheesy fantasy.

Worrying issues aside, Into Darkness attempts to balance the gritty betrayals and guns-a-blazin’ action with character development and humour, something else which it excels at. The banter between Kirk and Spock generated plenty of laughs from the audience at my screening and this reinforces the whole ‘family’ vibe that permeates through every scene. This is a much more personal film than its origin story predecessor; knowledge of the characters is heavily implied and some of the interactions are beyond charming – the family core is what it’s all about.

The one man who alienates himself from this is, of course, Mr. Bad Guy. Cumberbatch has never been better; John Harrison is a fiendishly cunning and ferocious enemy played with such eeriness that his villain status is confirmed the first time those eyes lock onto you with that penetrating stare. There’s just something about him; he looks incredibly reptilian and his mannerisms reek of sinisterness – look, I invented a word just for him. An exposition-filled scene in the Enterprise’s brig stands out as the best sequence in the whole film, acting-wise.

He is by far the star of the show and eclipses just about every other actor in terms of performance, though that’s not to take anything away from Quinto’s Spock – he was quite simply born for that role and makes it his own, even if he reminds you of Sheldon Cooper at every turn which can be quite distracting.

Into Darkness really is all about Kirk, Spock and Harrison and the works just fine as they are the most interesting characters, but plenty of you will be disappointed at the lack of development the other core crew members get. Scotty (Simon Pegg) has something to do at least, but the others are left on the sidelines… even Zoe Saldana’s Uhura. The addition of Carol Marcus (Alice Eve) does little to distract from the main trio’s story and in fact seems to serve little purpose, except for amping up the sex appeal… if you like the ‘women in uniform’ sort of thing.

The narrative that these characters find themselves in fairs far better; the ingenious ‘destiny change’ story the first film ran with has given director J.J. Abrams the chance to craft his own tales of adventure and action – Into Darkness is one such attempt at mixing things up. It certainly will surprise some of you, with revelations aplenty, but don’t expect any earth-shattering twists or turns; it’s not that sophisticated, which is almost disappointing, but it’s an enjoyable romp all the same.

This is one film that you should definitely see, Trek fan or otherwise. It’s a humourous character tale driven by strong performances that’ll inflict every emotion possible upon you. It looks fantastic and if you’ve got the chance for an IMAX 3D showing then make sure you head to it, it’s worth the extra pennies.

Star Trek Into Darkness has done that rare thing; it has surpassed its predecessor in terms of quality and has cemented this series’ place in the blockbuster category – may it live long and… ah you know the rest.

It’s quickly approaching the date of the Xbox Reveal – May 21st. Amidst the rumours circulating, there’s little confirmation of what we will see, apart from Call of Duty: Ghosts. However, expectations can be raised if Major Nelson’s comments over the past weeks are anything to go by.

Larry Hyrb, more affectionally known by his gamertag Major Nelson, is the Director of Programming for Xbox Live, and after the PS4 launch, and the recent Xbox Reveal tease, his words give me faith that Microsoft know what they’re doing as they unveil the competitor to the next-generation PlayStation.

After Sony’s event, Major Nelson tweeted the following:

Announce a console without actually showing a console? That’s one approach

— Larry Hryb (@majornelson) February 21, 2013

If the next-gen Xbox isn’t shown, that’s really going to blow up in his face – and he should know! So we know that we’ll get to see what the next-Box looks like, but what about all of those rumours about always-online consoles, and no pre-owned games?

Major Nelson’s official account commenting on Reddit posts in /r/xbox360

Sure, it could simply be deflection from those rumours, and they might happen, but commenting rather than simply ignoring suggests that the most persistent (and damaging) of rumours won’t be realised come the Tuesday after next. Meanwhile, for those Xbox Live Gold users worried about their paid subscription lacking the features of PlayStation+, Hyrb offers a reassuring nod that yes, he has shown your thoughts to the appropriate people, though whether anything will come of it is yet to be seen. Either way, Xbox Live Gold must evolve to compete next-generation.

You can find Major Nelson on Twitter at @majornelson, or online at www.majornelson.com

I’m predominantly an Xbox 360 gamer (thought my hours on Football Manager might suggest otherwise), so I’m eagerly awaiting the event to see whether I’ll be jumping right into the next-generation, or whether I’ll be sticking with the current generation a while longer.

We spoke to Michael Rooker about London, De Niro and of course, The Walking Dead!

We grabbed a chat with The Walking Dead’s Michael Rooker, and found out what he thinks of his character from the show, his fans, and London. Be warned, there are Season 3 spoilers below!

—————————————————————————————————————————

First things first, The Walking Dead Season 3. Bloomin’ eck! That was really something! How long ago did you find out that Merle wasn’t going to make it to the finale?

That was probably two weeks before we did the episode. I thought my episode was better than the finale! It was quite an episode and was written very well. I had a great time doing it.

In Season 1 Merle was just Daryl’s racist big brother, and then he disappeared, and reappeared in Season 3 where he left the show as a hero! Were you happy with the way Merle’s character developed and became a fan favourite?

Oh he did! I think even in Season 1, if you look back to the first time you see his character appear, it was written like that in the beginning. All of these shows have to have the racist redneck kind of character. I got the role and then I talked to the writers and we were all excited to try to bring out more than just your basic redneck. When I get these types of roles I look for stuff in there that I can do that really brings out and makes it three dimensional, something that people haven’t seen yet.

After the disappearance on the rooftop, people were just sort of digging the character, and what did it for me, especially with the fans, was that episode where I have this huge monologue on the rooftop, right before the zombies are coming, and right before I cut my hand off, and I think that monologue really sets the tone for the character and shows people that ‘yeah, this guy, there’s something else going on here’. It got them interested in this character and interested in him so much that they wanted to see this guy come back once he’d disappeared. The snowball had already rolled down the hill and kept getting bigger and bigger, and people wanted me back. Every week they kept looking for this character to reappear and so it was kinda cool that that started happening.

And definitely when Norman Reedus’ character Daryl (arguably the most popular character on the show) is helped by Merle in Woodbury – the audience can’t ask for more than that?

For sure! That’s so true! I think that was the true line throughout the entire arc of my character. Even when my character wasn’t on screen or there in Season 2, you were still thinking ‘I wanna see these two hook up. I wanna see what happens next’.

Did you find that surprising? Because the (Walking Dead) comic books were already a big success, but Daryl and Merle weren’t part of that universe, yet are two of the most popular characters on the show.

Norman and I both are very happy. They really wrote for me quite well. I was really happy with a lot of stuff that I got to do on the show, so I was very pleased to be brought back, but the way they wrote for me was just magnificent. It would have been amazing if Merle and Daryl had gotten more things to do together, but it might have been overpowering because every episode we had a scene together, that’s all people could talk about really.

I think everyone wanted to see Merle and Daryl cutting off the Governor’s head, or removing his other eye or something?

Oh yeah. Oh my god they wanted to see that really badly! And hopefully they’ll get to see that soon. I don’t know what’s going to happen with the Governor character, but right now he’s lived to fight another day.

And hopefully die another day!

(Chuckles)

So is that it for you on the TV show? Are you never going back, or do you think you could make an appearance, kind of like how Lori has been appearing to Rick, but with Daryl and we could see a flashback or something?

I have no idea. I don’t know what they plan on doing for the rest of the show, and with Norman’s character, if they’re ever even going to touch on what took place there, when Merle went to make his attack on the Governor. I don’t know if that will ever be brought up again. I have no idea. It’ll be a big surprise to me; I’m a big fan of the show, so I’m anxious to see how they are going to proceed in Season 4. I know a lot of people are very disappointed that Merle is not around any more, so those fans are very loyal to this character, and very much anxious to see what The Walking Dead will do without the character of Merle!

Whilst Merle is a loss, I’m sure The Walking Dead will be back bigger and better than ever next Season.

Oh goodness yeah. The writers are all so great, and the actors are fabulous, so it’s gonna be awesome. I’m anxious to see it. I’ll be very much ready for my next instalment of The Walking Dead.

As for you, you’ve just been cast as Yondu in the Guardians of the Galaxy film. That’s going to be quite a bit different from The Walking Dead, I’d say!

Michael has been cast as Yondu in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy film.

Y’know, that whole franchise, that storyline is pretty interesting. Sadly I’m not at liberty to talk a lot about going to the galaxy for you.

Filming (for Guardian’s of the Galaxy) is happening in London, so hypothetically, would you be looking forward to it if you were going to be in London?

Hypothetically, I love London! I just paid a visit over there to see my friend James Gunn, and it’s a great place. I’m a big fan of all of the folks and all of the fans over there across the pond. And hypothetically, it would be great to get over there and do some work some time. I’m anxious to come over there and visit you folks.

You’ve played a lot of action roles and characters. Could you ever see yourself going the Robert De Niro route and becoming the sweet old granddad character?

Look at that transition! He’s amazing! I can’t believe it. De Niro… that guy can do anything! He’s such a great actor and if my career could be as good as his in any way, no matter what age group I’m playing, I’d be very satisfied. I’m still very physical and in good shape, so I plan on getting a few more acting roles under my belt.

You’re very big on Twitter and a lot of your tweets are pictures with fans, like at conventions. How important is the interaction with fans?

You know what? I get a kick out of it. I really enjoy it. The fans that come to the conventions are very appreciative. They very much love that I’m there. I love that I’m there and getting to meet people, take photographs, do Q&As.

It’s obvious that if I hadn’t gone to that area, there’s no way the fans and I would ever have met, so the idea of that is the great thing about it. A lot of people thought ‘Michael Rooker’s fanbase – who could that be?’ It’s everybody, dude! It’s not just horror fans. It’s not just sci-fi fans. I’ve done a lot of different genres, so the fans come out wherever I’m at.

Now that The Walking Dead has gone crazy ballistic on everybody, the fans have grown, so my fanbase is massive now! Especially my videogame fans. I worked on Black Ops 1, Black Ops 2, and even the Merle and Daryl game – The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. Film fans, TV fans and gaming fans, are pretty different. I mean, real gamers, a lot of them don’t really have time to watch TV. I tell you, the serious gamers, they’re going at it a lot, all the time. So to get those two together – a major fanbase in both those groups is just phenomenal, and I meet my gaming fans, my Walking Dead, and film fans, at these conventions. They all come out. I think it’s a very important aspect of what any actor can do for their career and just to meet the fans.

—————————————————————————————————————————

You can find out more about what Michael Rooker is up to on his personal Twitter, or his official website.

It’s just a little after 12 O’clock in the afternoon on a Sunday and Rory O’Grady, bassist and one of the vocalists of the extremely popular three piece Wigan band Boomin is sitting in the living room of his home looking slightly groggy from the night before spent entertaining a crowd of enthusiastic Butlins holidaymakers in Skegness.

Despite looking slightly groggy Rory’s demeanour is cheerful and chatty as he talks about how he first became interested in becoming a musician.

“Music has always been in the family, my dad played music all my life and there’s always been music on in the house when I wake up and go to bed. I feel like I’ve sort of been born with it in my blood. I don’t think there’s anything else that I can do as well. At school I just got an A in music and an A in art and that was it, everything else was rubbish to say the least”.

It was after high school, when Rory began studying at Wigan and Leigh College in 2003, that Rory first met his band mates, brothers Adam and Edd Langmead with whom he would go on to form Boomin.

“We started a metal band in College, did that for a year and a half and then decided to start doing covers of songs, solely covers. There were five of us at that point and then that slowly went down to four and then finally to just three of us. And from there we decided that I could go on bass and that Adam could sing and then that we could all sing and that’s how the magic started to happen. And in 2006 we decided to start playing under the name Boomin”.

First gigs can make and break bands. Boomin’s first gig was in the Charnley Arms a popular local Wigan restaurant; not exactly know for having a reputation for playing live music. Rory describes here how it felt to perform in a restaurant full of dining families.

“It was a bit surreal really because restaurants aren’t the best music venues; it wasn’t even as if it was a pub atmosphere. People were eating their Surf and Turf when we were going on. Luckily we had a few of our local fans there; you know local friends and they had their own homemade Boomin T-shirts on so that was good. We had our three groupies in the corner and everyone else I can’t quite remember really. We just performed and that was it really”.

With the tale of their first gig out of the way Rory went on to regale us with the tale of the weirdest gig that he’d had ever performed at:

“Well we do all kinds of gigs weddings, birthdays, parties, festivals, originals, you name it we do it. I suppose one of the memories that sticks in my head the most was a wedding we performed at between a male gay couple. At the wedding they had a sound limiter, and if you a live band you can’t really play with a sound limiter because once you hit the cymbals it cuts you off and the PA will go off and you can’t play under a certain decibel. It was a joke really if you’re a live band you can’t really do it.

“But the venue was adamant that they had to use the sound limiter because otherwise they would get shut down (due to complaints they’d received from neighbours). But one of the couple was a bit of a drama queen and he started to stomp and cry in front of the Manager. He slammed down his champagne glass down and started to say “Do you know who these guys are! They’re in the iTunes Rock Chart!” Rory says laughing at the absurdity of his own story. When he regains his composure he continues:

“If we would have filmed it, it would have been famous on YouTube. It was probably the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. He proper just hit the roof. He said “I’ve paid over £10,000 for this day” and he started to cry crocodile tears. The manager just bottled it and turned the sound limiter off and we went ahead. The husband started laughing about it later and said “It’s amazing what a couple of tears can do and a bit of acting”. When we watched it, it was just unbelievable. That’s got to have been the funniest memory I have of the weirdest gig we’ve ever performed.

But not all of Rory’s Gigs are as amusing as this one, some of them Rory admits have been downright dangerous.

“We’ve had a few pub gigs that haven’t gone well. One pub got a bit rough and it just kept getting worse. All the other pubs around it started shutting down and the wrong sort started coming in and the landlord started to let it go. There was also no security on the doors so we just felt a bit vulnerable, being on stage is a vulnerable spot. We had monitors fall over, beer go everywhere and we had all kinds of things falling over, stuff got broke” says Rory shaking his head.

Rory description of the gig brings to mind the scene in Blues Brothers, in which the Brothers have to stand behind chicken wire at a gig in order to avoid missiles thrown by the audience, luckily for Rory and the band it didn’t come to this.

“The landlord agreed to pay for the damages caused by the audience. Other than that we’ve had, not full on brawls, but we’ve been pretty close to bad things happening, things kicking off. Rough pubs aren’t after live music; people are just there to get drunk they don’t care what you play. But were slowly getting out of places like that now. We’re slowly making our way up the ladder so we don’t have to play those sorts of places. But yeah any pubs where there not that interested in live music those are the worst gigs”.

Boomin released their debut album ‘Original Junkie’ in August of 2012 and the album quickly made its way to Number 22 on the iTunes Rock Album Chart on fan sales alone. Rory states here how he felt upon learning that the Album had made its way so far up the Rock Album Charts list.

“It was an amazing day. On the Monday it was released we got enough pre-sales on our website to get in the charts and just seeing it rising and rising, we couldn’t keep our eyes of our phones we were screenshotting it and screenshotting it. We were up there with the likes of the Spice Girls and the Foo Fighters and we were outselling them at that moment and you never think that you’re going to do that”.

But despite the band achieving such an amazing feat Rory believes the band could have improved upon those numbers. “We could have probably done better no doubt. If we’d have had a pre-sale on iTunes people could have ordered it on their phones weeks before and we would have hammered everyone then with text, emails, and even face-to-face to tell them to get on their phones to order it, £8 quid pre-sale, you know, and then it just literally goes through on that the day of release. But it’s a hard thing to get that pre-Sale on iTunes. But for what we did though it was amazing and it’s quite an achievement for a band that’s got no industry backing and money support. All the industry people have marketing behind them, with their songs being played on the radio six times a day, if a song is played that much their songs are bound to get into your head no matter what. And that’s what you’re up against”.

Speaking of people in the industry the band themselves have quite the celebrity profile, having played backup to or with famous musicians such as Newton Faulkner and non musicians such as comedian Chubby Brown. Rory recounts here the best gig the band ever played with a big name:

“I’d say the best gig we’ve ever done with a big named celebrity would probably be the McFly gig that we won last year (Boomin came third in the Mcfly Battle of the Bands contest which provided them with the opportunity to open for Mcfly in Stoke during their 2012 tour) there were 1600 people there. Kids were just screaming and my ears were just shaking. It was awesome I’d say that was the best”.

When asked the final question “What the best thing about being a member of Boomin” Rory gives a genuine and heartfelt answer in which it shows that Rory truly values the bands fans:

“Doing what we love for a living basically, simple as that. Playing music is what we live for, what it’s all about. Our dream is to play our own original songs to earn a living but not everyone can do that. So were working our best to do it and if not we’ll play other peoples songs but in our own way and we’ll have fun and hopefully keep smiles on people’s faces so they can enjoy it. They’ll support us, they’ll buy the CDs, buy the merchandise, and spread the word and we’ll just keep going. That’s the best thing. We’re doing our dream basically; we’re playing music for a living the box has been ticked of what we do. If we don’t make it big we just won’t be playing at places like Wembley Stadium. But you never know we’ll just keep living and keep dreaming”.

After a glorious season (that is still going on), Gareth Bale was crowned the PFA Player of the Year, and the PFA Young Player of the Year at the awards last night. The winger has been in sensational form this year, lifting Spurs when they’ve needed it most, and possibly helping them to secure Champions League football. Whilst he’s certainly a worthy winner, is it perhaps wrong that a player gets to win both awards?

I mean, sure, it has only happened twice in the last however many years – Ronaldo in 2007, and Andy Gray in 1978 – but wouldn’t it have been fairer and more appropriate for the runner up of the YPOTY to be crowned? Player of the Year means you’re the top player in the league. Young Player simply reduces the overall number of candidates, meaning if you win the former, the latter is a lesser award. For someone like Benteke, who was runner up for the YPOTY award, it would mean the world for that accolade considering he’s unlikely to win the Player of the Year whilst at a club like Aston Villa.

Since the Premier League’s creation in 1992, there has only been 4 occasions when a player has won the Player of the Year award without playing for Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool or Spurs, and on those four occasions, it was the current league winners or runners-up who had the winning player. So, the best player is largely considered to have contributed to club league success, rather than solely contribution in relation to club size. Meaning for a player like Benteke (or Lukaku on loan at West Brom) to have their contribution acknowledged in the YPOTY rather than a top six side player, would have been fantastic.

Plenty of explosions and a surprisingly deep plot; Iron Man 3 has set the bar high for Man of Steel in the competition to see which will be the year's best superhero blockbuster

Ah, the third album. Widely regarded as the most difficult of releases, by the time you get to that stage the audience are either overly bored or overly expectant and getting it just right is hard. With Iron Man, though, Marvel have been fortunate; since 2008 there have been four films where this armoured hero has taken centre stage, certainly being the biggest face in The Avengers. The demand has never waned; people adore Iron Man and the guy behind the suit, the effervescent Robert Downey Jr., who has made the character his own despite clearly just playing himself for all these years.

Last year’s mega blockbuster brushed off the slightly sour taste left by 2010’s rather flat Iron Man 2 and the hype for the first post-Avengers Marvel flick has been building ever since the credits rolled.

Iron Man 3 does not disappoint. Let’s hit that one right out of the park shall we? This wise-cracking trilogy follows the pattern set by most, whereby the second movie is the stinker and the first and third films compete for the pound shop gold trophy. It’s a close call, for sure, but this third outing might just take the prize at the death… think Sergio Agüero with that goal and you’re just about there.

In a not too dissimilar way to The Dark Knight Rises, we begin with our hero being a bit, well, weird. Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) has taken to living almost exclusively in his basement, working fastidiously on new iterations of his famous suit. This causes a bit of friction with his lady friend Pepper Pots (Gwyneth Paltrow) and this forms the core story of the film. Much like Christopher Nolan’s third Batman movie, this is a tale on a much more personal level than its predecessors and deals with far more serious issues than have been encountered before. This is all about Stark’s dedication to Pots and despite being absent for a good chunk of the film, her influence is felt through his actions across the 130 minute running time.

However, this isn’t some romantic drama, it’s still a superhero movie and when a terrorist called The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) begins blowing stuff up, seemingly at random, things really get heated. Stark is swept into action after one such attack leaves his former security guy Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) in hospital and begins a process of rebuilding that’ll see his limits pushed, his relationships stretched and his assumptions tested.

Iron Man 3 follows what could be described as a generic storyline, but it’s certainly not as linear as the trailers and synopsis make it out to be. There are definitely some surprises along the way that’ll surely divide fans and the use of the popular Extremis technology from the comic books certainly adds a different dimension to all of the action.

And that’s one thing that’s not in short supply; there is an unrelenting amount of action on display, but not enough to make you think this is some lame version of Transformers. There’s a lot of down time too, providing plenty of time for character development. Stark is, as ever, amazing – Downey Jr. was born for this role and the constant cockiness, blasé attitude and killer one-liners make him a great character to get involved with. Kingsley’s Mandarin is also a serious scene-stealer and Guy Pearce’s Aldrich Killian is an eerily likeable guy despite being rather sinister behind the scenes.

Sadly, James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) and Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall) get the short end of the stick with both seeming a little one dimensional and uninteresting. This is despite both being fairly integral to the story with the former finally getting a fleshed out relationship with Stark. Other than that, they are both just faces with which to spew parts of the story which is quite disappointing considering Rhodes’ role as The Iron Patriot.

Iron Man 3 is definitely more sophisticated than the majority of superhero movies out there but isn’t quite perfect. The ending felt a little a rushed together and the constant throwbacks to The Avengers made it seem like a two hour plus advert for that film’s DVD.

Still, it’s a nice bow with which to tie up the trilogy and rounds things off very nicely, with all loose ends sorted out. The directions the narrative takes will be sure to raise eyebrows but the blend between drama, action and humour is pretty much spot on with director Shane Black’s skill at writing witty scripts paying dividends.

Marvel’s Phase 2 movies have officially begun to roll out, with sequels to Thor and Captain America in the pipeline, but Iron Man 3 will most likely be the best of the bunch. It falls down where most films do but more than makes up for those flaws with an interesting non-linear plot, a deeper emotional side than ever before and plenty of action to really fill out those IMAX seats.

Summer movie season is underway with a hell of a blockbuster. Go and join the party.

For those of you that don’t know, I am a humungous film fan. It’s ridiculous, seriously. We all have our area of interest and mine is certainly the silver screen; I love films, I love the stories, the characters, the music, the cinematography… everything. I consider myself a film buff and so do a lot of people that have the ‘pleasure’ of being around me when we’re doing a quiz and the obligatory “in what year was _____ released?” question pops up.

I’ve made it a point to watch every film that’s ever been deemed a classic by the masses and have a list that I’m slowly ticking down, as well as a list of every film I’ve ever seen. Somehow I’ve remembered them all (though there is a sub-list of “wait, have I seen this?” movies). Seeing as though I usually watch a new film every day I’m not far off reaching the 650 milestone. That’ll be a nice day, and I intend to make that film a special one.

But I’m not here to sit and spew my geekiness at you (seriously, who keeps a list like that?!), I’m here to natter about what makes my perfect film. If you’re a site regular then you’ll know that I’m sort of in charge of the film section and do the majority of the reviews – as it turns out I’m quite hard to please.

Indeed, I have my own personal scoring system outside of Media Blasphemy and out of the 600+ films I’ve seen only a handful have been granted entry into the prestigious and respected 10/10 Club.

I grade films in a way that will be completely irrelevant to anyone else. Of course, I take the usual stuff into account (acting, scripting… all that malarkey) but the personal aspect comes in too. If I adored a film as a child then it its score will rocket; enjoyment is the single biggest factor to a film’s success in my eyes. You can have all the fancy dialogue, complex characters and bombastic action scenes you want, but if it’s making me sleepy then I won’t like it.

In that regard, some of the films on my perfect list will surprise you but others are stalwarts of any amazing film collection – it’s quite an eclectic mix, see what you think:

. The Shawshank Redemption
. The Dark Knight
. Schindler’s List
. Alien
. Aliens
. The Iron Giant
. Jaws
. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
. Jurassic Park

I imagine some of you are thinking “what the f*c*k?!” and “but where’s The Godfather?!”, as well as other irrelevant questions. Remember, this is my list for me and me alone, I just thought I’d share it with you. I’m not one for pandering to the qualities of a movie just because the cinema world expects you to. Hell, I think The Godfather is quite boring in places, but it’s praised to the heavens by just about everyone – I refuse to jump on that bandwagon.

For a film to make that list it has to be special to me or have an emotional impact that leaves me speechless. Where the latter is concerned, both The Shawshank Redemption and Schindler’s List left me quivering after their final scene had faded to black.

There are plenty of movies that are perilously close to joining; the other Lord of the Rings films, Gladiator, Finding Nemo… this list goes on. But to make that push into perfection it really has to be something special, something which I relate to, something which I’ll make my kids watch and something which I’ll remember forever.

The beauty of Alien, the thrill of Aliens, the scale of The Return of the King, the comradery of Jaws, the spectacle of Jurassic Park, the awe of The Dark Knight and the innocence of The Iron Giant.

Films are everything to me, and they always will be. And if one hits me on an emotional level with enough force, you can bet it’ll get its 10/10 lanyard.
